Newbie - Astrometry Issues

Post by dthomson39 » 01 Aug 2019, 08:21

I am exploring astrometry and photometry for the first time and I have a few issues that I don't understand.
Astrometry - I have an image and register stars (say 10) 6 are found on the image but I don't seem able to match the pattern on the star chart - if a repeat the process the software seems to select a different group of stars in a different location. What might I be doing wrong?

Photometry - I have looked at this but cannot see where you find the values you need to get the right values on readout ie how do i find k1 and k2 for my setup?

Are there videos or tutorials for this process?

Any help welcomed.

Hello,
I suggest to start with Tutorial #9 with the M57 image (you don't need to create a Sum). Try both the automatic and manual procedure.
If a precision of 0.3 arcseconds is sufficient, you may just use plate solving for astrometry.
About k1 and k2, setting them manually is used only for instrumental magnitude. For photometry based on reference stars there is no need to set them, actually they are the result of photometry.
